First time? Here's what it's like

Walking into a room of people you've never met takes a bit of courage, and knowing exactly what you're walking into makes it easier. So here is the honest version of what these evenings are like, with nothing dressed up. This is about the regular free events, the mingle, the pub crawl, the board games and the like. Once in a while I run something built differently on purpose, like a paid workshop or a ticketed special, and that one works its own way and says so clearly on its own page.

You can come alone. Most people do.

Arriving alone is the normal way to arrive at these events, not the exception. I started Room for More because I was lonely in a city full of people, so the whole thing is built around showing up on your own. I keep an eye out for new faces, and the group is used to folding people in.

What actually happens

There is no rigid program and nobody puts you on the spot. You show up, grab a drink or something to eat if you feel like it (never required), and talk to people. Some formats give the evening a bit of natural structure: at the mingle I bring optional question cards and we rotate when the group is big enough, at board games the game does a lot of the talking for you, and on the pub crawl the walking between places keeps things moving.

You can arrive late and you can leave whenever you want. Staying twenty minutes is a completely fine first visit.

How to find the group

Every event page has the address and a note on how to find us, and at bar events there is usually a small Meetup sign on the table. I also post a short update in the comments on the Meetup event when I arrive, so if you're standing inside wondering which table it is, check there. On the pub crawl, moves between bars get announced in the WhatsApp group.

Language

We switch between English and Norwegian depending on who shows up. Both are completely fine, and you don't need to be good at either. Nobody is grading anyone.

Cost and age

Most events are free to join, and you pay for your own food and drinks. Some venues we use are 20+, and when that applies it says so clearly on the event page, so bring ID for those. When an event ever costs something, the price and what it covers are stated up front.

RSVP, and what it does for you

You can RSVP right on the event page: enter your email, you get a one time login link, no password, and from then on it's one tap. RSVPing helps me know roughly how much space we need, and it gets you a reminder email the day before. Meetup works too if you're already there. Plans change? Cancelling takes one tap on your account page, and nobody minds.

Afterwards

If you click with someone, you don't have to lose them when the evening ends. People who were at the same event can ask each other to swap contact info through this site. The other person picks what to share, if anything, and nothing is ever shared without a clear yes. Being found, answering, and sharing are free and always will be; sending a request is part of the small membership that funds this.

The conversation doesn't have to end with the evening either. There's a community chat here on the site: a lounge that's open to everyone with an account, and a chat for each event where the people going can talk before and after.

Still reading?

That's fine too. Plenty of people read the event write-ups for a while before coming, and every page tells you what that evening is actually like. If you have a question I haven't answered here, send it through the contact page and I'll answer honestly.

Just moved here? There's a page for that too: new in Oslo. Foretrekker du norsk? Den norske siden er her.
